Description

GT-Caries Dye is a dental diagnostic agent used to help dentists identify carious (decayed) tooth structure during cavity preparation. It works by staining the denatured collagen found in infected dentin, which is the softer, irreversibly damaged outer layer of tooth decay. By selectively coloring the carious dentin, the dye provides a visual guide, helping the clinician to differentiate between infected dentin that needs to be removed and affected dentin (which may be demineralized but is capable of remineralization and should ideally be preserved) or healthy tooth structure. This aids in the conservative removal of decay, aiming to preserve as much healthy tooth tissue as possible while ensuring all infected tissue is excavated. The dye is typically applied to the prepared cavity, allowed a short time to penetrate, and then rinsed off, revealing the stained areas.

  • Active Ingredient (Dye): Commonly an acid dye such as Acid Red 52 (or similar) in a propylene glycol solvent. Some older formulations used basic fuchsin, but this has been largely replaced due to carcinogenic concerns. Other dyes like malachite green or various blue dyes have also been explored or used in different products.

  • Solvent: Propylene glycol is a common solvent, chosen for its ability to penetrate the porous, denatured collagen of carious dentin. Polypropylene glycol has also been studied as an alternative solvent.

  • Color: Varies depending on the dye used (e.g., red, green, blue, black).

  • Volume: The product image shows a 10 ml bottle.

  • Application: Typically applied with a microbrush or cotton pellet.

  • Rinsing: Requires rinsing after application to remove excess dye and reveal stained areas.

  • Mechanism: Stains denatured collagen in infected dentin, not bacteria directly.

  • Packaging: Usually supplied in a dropper bottle for easy dispensing.
